So, you are keen to work in Australia, take advantage of the sunshine and try your luck with all the things that can kill you in our boundless plains?
Wonderful!
Read on for some hot tips about Australian work visas.
First, be aware of your options. The landscape of work visas in Australia has changed dramatically in recent years, especially because of COVID-19. Some employers may be reluctant to sponsor workers due to the costs or unpredictable timing of work visas, but others are welcoming the borders being opened and being able to attract talent from all over the globe.
But employer sponsored are not your only option. There are individual work visa options that may be available to you. These options are generally dependent on the occupation that you are working in as the skilled occupation lists dictate the types of visas that you are eligible for. And, if you are a student studying in Australia, the Graduate Visa could also be an option for you.
The lesson here is, find out your options before you put all your eggs in one basket. You may be pleasantly surprised at your opportunities!
Okay, now you know your options, are you going to go with independent or sponsored? There are benefits and disadvantages to both options including costs, timing etc. The option that you choose will be dependent on where you are at in your employment journey and of course whether you have a ready and willing sponsor!
Then, whichever you choose – set some realistic expectations. This will include around what you expect out of an employer and what you are going to be required to do to meet the visa criteria. Time, money, and responsibilities are the critical expectations to be set between you and your employer, and for yourself.
And, if we’ve said it once then we have said it 100 times – all positive visa applications require the right documents with the right information. When preparing for a work visa, like any other visa, you should consider the documents that are going to be required. For example, do you have a valid passport, is your resume up to date? And, if you are being sponsored has your employer advertised the role in the way that they are required too, and do you have a solid employment contract with the employer? These are all important things to consider when preparing documents (among many other intricacies!).
Finally, prepare for your new role! Have you been vaccinated against COVID-19? This is a requirement of entry to Australia. Or is there some pre-training or induction process that you need to undertake before your first day of work? Statistics suggest that starting strong in a role mean that you stay longer in the role and be more invested in the work that you do. So, get involved from day one … make this job the best one yet!
